Ecobreves – BRAZIL: Green Seal for Technology

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 12 2009 (IPS) - The University of Sao Paulo closed the year 2008 with two important environmental initiatives: the green seal for technological equipments, and the project for a Sustainable Environments and Climate Studies Center. The seal is awarded to computer and electronics that are produced through environmentally-sustainable manufacturing processes. Already, the Brazilian company Itautec has been awarded the seal for the production of more than 2,000 computers commissioned by USP.

The studies center will use rainwater, natural light and solar energy in its facilities.

The works will be completed in 2011 and “will encourage other buildings, in or outside USP, to use these simple and economic resources,” which are also “environmentally-friendly,” Marcelo Romero, Vice Chair of the School of Architecture and Urbanism, responsible for project design together with the Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences Institute, told Tierramérica.
