RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb 9 2009 (IPS) - Brazil's environment minister, Carlos Minc, has banned the use of asbestos in public works and in all vehicles associated with his portfolio, due to the health dangers the fire-resistant mineral poses. The initiative, adopted Jan. 30, is important as a symbol, but not for its scope, says Fernanda Giannasi, coordinator of the Network for an Asbestos Ban in Latin America.

“The moment is crucial. It is putting the issue on the government agenda. We hope that the ministries of health, social security and labor demonstrate coherence in their words and actions,” because they have declared their support for the measure, she told Tierramérica.

Exposure to asbestos, especially inhalation of asbestos fibers, can cause cancer or asbestosis (inflammation of the lungs).

Because of its flame-resistant properties, asbestos has been used in construction, such as roofing, and in components of brakes for vehicles.
