Ecobreves – MEXICO: School Kids Turn Eco-Monitors

MEXICO CITY, Apr 27 2009 (IPS) - Esteban Carrillo, 12, committed his parents to reducing electricity and water consumption at their home in the state if Mexico, neighboring the capital. Along with 549 children, he was named an ecological monitor for his district. “Taking one less minute in the shower can make a big difference for the environment, just like changing to energy-saving light bulbs, which are incredible,” Carrillo told Tierramérica.

The eco-monitors, who the state's environment agency designated in primary and secondary schools, have taken on the commitment to try to change family and social habits.

The students are chosen after attending a training program. Their duties will last for one year.
