Ecobreves – GLOBAL: Lawmakers Against Climate Change

ROME, Jun 15 2009 (IPS) - Some 100 lawmaker from the 13 most polluting countries of the planet gathered Jun. 12-13 in the Italian capital to pursue an effective international agreement to fight climate change. Stephen Byers, chairman of GLOBE (Global Legislators Organization for a Balanced Environment) and former British minister of energy and trade, told Tierramérica that the aim of the meeting was to urge the governments of the Group of Eight most industrialized nations to take action to halt climate change.

GLOBE convened environmental experts and scientists to sit down in discussions with parliamentarians from the G8 (Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and United States) and from the five developing countries that produce the most greenhouse gases: Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa.

The meet is part of the preparations in the lead-up to the G8 Summit to take place Jul. 8-10 in Italy.
