Ecobreves – HONDURAS: New Law on Environmental Education

TEGUCIGALPA, Aug 10 2009 (IPS) - After reaching broad consensus with civil society organizations, the Honduran national Congress last week approved the first Law on Environmental Education. The legislation calls for reforms of school curriculums and incorporation of the news media into campaigns for environmental conservation.

The initiative has the approval of 100 citizen groups and includes the creation of classes, campaigns, risk prevention actions, and the development of a culture of preservation of natural resources and ecological balance, president of parliament Alfredo Saavedra told Tierramérica.

The law takes effect in 2010.
