Ecobreves – HONDURAS: Food Aid Arrives

TEGUCIGALPA, May 10 2010 (IPS) - The drought that affects some 150,000 people in six of the 18 departments in Honduras has led to stepping up aid with the support of the World Food Program, Lisandro Rosales, coordinator of the government's Permanent Contingency Committee, told Tierramérica. Some 19,000 food rations were distributed to families in nine municipalities in the southern department of Valle to mitigate the nutrition effects of the extended drought resulting from the cyclical El Niño climate phenomenon.

Distribution began earlier in May of food, as well as inputs for cultivation once the rains return, predicted to start in two weeks, according to the Meteorology Directorate.
