Ecobreves – VENEZUELA: Voluntary Collection of Disposable Materials and E-Waste

CARACAS, Feb 6 2012 (IPS) - Venezuelan environmental organization Ecoclick coordinated the collection of several tons of disposable materials and equipment in middle-class and working-class neighborhoods of the capital in a single weekend. During the last weekend of January, 30 collection points were set up around the city for people to bring in their no longer serviceable household appliances, electronic equipment, computers and printers, as well as motors, batteries, light bulbs and used paper, plastic, glass and cardboard goods.

Ecoclick will deliver the waste collected to recycling companies operating in the area, and the money earned will be donated to organizations that assist children.

"We hope to repeat this operation at least every two months," Ecoclick spokesperson Ana Pereira told IPS.

"Our goal is to create, with the support of companies, municipal authorities, environmental groups and other volunteers, a network that promotes sustainable development in Venezuela based on the three Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle," she added.
