BUENOS AIRES, Aug 31 2009 (IPS) - The Argentine chapter of the environmental group Greenpeace called on governments to fight global warming, which is melting South America's glaciers. Greenpeace recorded the shrinking of the glaciers in the southern Patagonia and the loss of ice masses across the Andes Mountains.

“The glaciers are like a thermometer that clearly demonstrate the impact of climate change,” Greenpeace's Juan Carlos Villalonga told to Tierramérica, stressing that the industrialized countries should reduce their greenhouse gas emissions at least 40 percent by 2020.

Just 100 days before the global climate conference to take place in Copenhagen in December, the environmental group said it plans to disseminate images of the shrinking of the Upsala and Viedma glaciers, and collect signatures to demand a strong commitment from government leaders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
