Ecobreves – HONDURAS: U.S. Donation for the Conservation of La Mosquitia

TEGUCIGALPA, Jul 16 2012 (IPS) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has approved a donation of 405,000 dollars for Honduras, aimed at promoting the ecological and sustainable conservation of the tropical rainforest region of La Mosquitia, on the country’s Atlantic coast. The donation will be administered by the Small Grants Programme (SGP) of the Global Environmental Facility, which has extensive experience in supporting initiatives targeted to the poorest communities in the region, such as the Biodiversity Conservation in Indigenous Productive Landscapes in La Mosquitia project.

The funds will be used to support the work of the fishing sector and other local productive sectors in areas such as recycling, the protection and management of the Caratasca Lagoon, rural tourism and reforestation, Hugo Galeano, the SGP coordinator in Honduras, told Tierramérica.

Disbursed over the course of one year, the funds will also contribute to training and technical assistance for the beneficiaries.
