RELIGION-MEXICO: Devil on the Loose

- The discovery by police this week of dozens of human skeletons in a cave in a wooded area on the outskirts of the capital provided alarming evidence of the spread of devil worshipping cults, police said.
The remains, which had been placed in the form of a circle and a half moon around a stone crowned with a human skull reading “Salud 14 Sabadur”, were found Tuesday by police officers who were chasing two suspected criminals in the area.
Police said that the human remains, bottles of liquor, pages torn out of pornographic magazines and female underwear discovered in the cave could be evidence of satanic ceremonies such as that found in other parts of the country.
The Roman Catholic Church previously stated such cults indulging in devil worship – which, police said, had ties with the drug trade and other kinds of criminal activity – increasingly were active in Mexico. The Church even set up a group of priests to specialise in exorcism ceremonies.
Reports on bodies discovered with signs of having served as human sacrifices, such as red ribbons or packages of hair, finger and toenails and dead animals, periodically crop up in the crime sections of local newspapers.
A Church spokesman, Ramon Godinez, said the Mexican cults are particularly prevalent along the U.S. border. In the United States, black roosters, cats and even “human beings are sacrificed in ‘black masses’,” he added.
Words referring to love, health and wisdom were found on some of the more than 50 skulls and human remains found this week in the capital. Police, however, did not rule out the possibility that the remains – some of which had holes that could have been caused by bullets – may have been stolen from a nearby cemetery.
Pilar Salamullana, author of the book “Satanic Sects”, says two Satanic cults – “The Children of Fire” and “Christian Santeria” – were recently found to be operating in Mexico.
The Children of Fire, also known to be in the United States and France, worships Lucifer through sexual practices, tattoos on the chest containing the number 666, and by invoking the dead, writes Salamullana.
Leaders of Christian Santeria, a strictly local group, were arrested on murder charges in the early 1990s. Slices of human flesh, recipients containing human brains, goat heads and chicken feathers were found in the group’s “temples” in Mexico City and in Matamoros on the U.S. border.
The government apparently remained ignorant of the magnitude of the cults, which remained out of control, warned Jorge Erdely with the Research Centre of Mexico’s Christian Institute.
Although a number of murders and cases of sexual abuse have been linked to Satanic cults, authorities had failed to set up a special investigative division like those established in other countries, he added.
